It would be difficult to come across a worst fashion disaster than wearing totally the wrong color or style shoes with your suit. Of course, it goes without saying that what looks good with one outfit may not look good with the whole of your closet.
If you are wearing a black, dark gray or navy blue suit then black shoes will never be wrong. If you decide upon brown shoes, they must be dark in tone. Certainly lighter shades of brown with a dark suit will never work.
If you are wearing a very light colored suit or even a white one, then a light shade of brown or light tan could work. The lighter in tone the suit the lighter shade of shoes you should wear. Often a contrasting belt will help to avoid too much of a contrast in the suit and shoes.
Remember, when people see you they will see your whole outfit, including the shoes. Too often wearers only check their appearance in the mirror from the waist up! A simple and effective way to “tie” your look together is to always choose a tie that is the same color, or contains some of the same color as your shoes. This will help bring your ensemble together, even if you are not sure your shoes are a perfect match.
Always wear lace-up shoes, and never wear slip-ons, if the occasion is formal. Be very careful in your selection as even some lace-up shoes will be too casual if the spaces between cross-overs are too wide.
The material and the finish of the shoe should also be considered. Pick shoes that reflect the look of the suit, such a choosing a smoothly shined black leather to compliment a a black men’s business suit.
However, don’t merely consider the color. Imagine black suede shoes worn with the same suit. Suede (Hush Puppies for example) will rarely match well with any suit. Certainly not in a business environment. The same thing applies to slip-ons and loafers.
Don’t forget the finishing touches. Your socks should always be the same color as your suit trousers. If you are wearing a light brown suit, match your socks to your shoe color. Be sure to keep your shoes clean and well polished to look well-groomed from head to toe!
